Any visitor to Newcastle will find one of the most happening places in Europe and a place that is constantly changing. But forget any stereotypical view, as it offers as much culture and history as it does the opportunity to have a great night out!

Newcastle (on the North bank of the River Tyne) and Gateshead (on the south bank) have joined to become a single destination called NewcastleGateshead. Linked by seven bridges, the stunning Quayside is the place to be with an array of bars, restaurants and art galleries, and it’s a perfect place for a stroll.

aerarann.com top tip

There’s always something going on in NewcastleGateshead from outdoor music festivals, spectacular performances, fireworks, air displays and colourful parades. That’s before you even start on the art and design, film, theatre and sport. Most events are free or inexpensive.

Highlights

In contrast to the modern Quayside, a glorious place from which to view the city is the Castle Keep, site of the ‘ New Castle’ from which the city takes its name. Meanwhile, public art, headed by the majestic Angel of the North, is commonplace and can be found throughout the city.

And if peace and quiet and beautiful scenery is your particular weakness then its worth noting that NewcastleGateshead is only a few minutes from many beautiful beaches and countryside areas.

If sport is your particular passion, you will find plenty to watch here. There’s Newcastle United Football Club and of course the newly promoted Sunderland AFC with its strong Irish connections! There’s also racing at Newcastle Racecourse and premiership rugby from Newcastle Falcons.

If you love to bag a bargain then a visit to MetroCentre – Europe’s largest retail and leisure centre is a must, while Newcastle city centre has all the high street names, and also a number of lovely independent boutiques.

And of course you’re guaranteed a great night out when you visit - there are many restaurants, pubs, clubs and bars to suit all tastes and pockets.

Go to www.NewcaslteGateshead.com for further information or pick up a Pocket Guide and What’s On Guide from the Newcastle Airport Information Desk.

Getting Around
Newcastle International Airport is conveniently located only 20 minutes from Newcastle city centre by Metro – a single ticket is just £2.70.

The Metro can also take you around the NewcastleGateshead area and to Sunderland and the lovely seaside towns of South Shields, Tynemouth and Whitley Bay in just 25 minutes.

Also in the city centre you won’t miss the bright yellow QuayLink buses which link the attractions in NewcastleGateshead and expanding Quayside areas.

Go to www.nexus.org.uk for public transport information.
